Upcycling a Hand Painted Storage Unit
While working at my clients home in another area, they asked if I could hand paint a John Lewis storage unit they had bought. The client wanted it painted in white. We call that upcycling.
Although it was a new unit, it still needed a clean down (I like to do things properly).
Then followed by a light abrade, then vacuumed off and tag ragged.
Then on with a coat of adhesion primer – the one I used at the time was Johnstone’s Trade Ultra Primer Sealer.
After the sealer had dried, it was all rubbed down again very lightly and just to provide a key for the finish coatings.
Onto the finish coats (two in number). The finish paint used a Johnstone’s paint. It was their Acrylic Satin in white. I had never used their acrylic satin on furniture before and I can honestly say, it has survived very well. But, this item of furniture is tucked up out of the way of home traffic and it doesn’t really get used only for storage purposes.
The first image above when I hand painted it was 2011 and the second image is from 2018.
My client was very pleased with how the unit turned out and is still impressed that the paint is still looking good to this day!
