Hand Painted Kitchen in Offham, Kent

02/02/2015 | By Tim More

A well known builder approached me to quote for a hand painted kitchen they were making in Offham, Kent.
The paint specification for this bespoke handmade kitchen was two coats of primer (one of which was tinted to the finish colour), followed by two full coats in the required colour. This was for the main kitchen units.

Never let a monkey paint!

What is the old saying? “If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys!”
Unfortunately for me, the builder had one of his “pretend painters” do the first coat of primer before I got to site. I was not impressed to say the least!

Best paint for this Hand Painted Kitchen

The paint brand of choice was basically up to me as they wanted me to advise on this.
On this particular kitchen, I chose Mylands of London wood paint in Eggshell. This is a lovely durable paint for hand painted kitchens.
Mylands hold some lovely traditional colours. However, if asked, they will carry out a colour matching service if you have a preferred colour, which was the case here for the client.

What colour for a hand painted kitchen?

The main colour of the kitchen has totally slipped my mind as this project was carried out a few years back.

The centre island was to be painted with Farrow & Ball Estate Eggshell in Calke Green No.34. This brand was chosen as the island was an extra and the builders client asked me to paint it for them.
I am not afraid to say that I am not a lover of Farrow & Ball paints at all. The colours are very nice, but the paint… well!

I love working for builders! (Did I just say that)?

All went fairly smoothly with the contract. The only situation I had while painting this kitchen was the builder allowed the world and his mother in the same area while I was carrying out the painting.
I don’t like that at all! Why?
Because most trades are carrying out work that is dusty in nature. All within an area that wet paint in it. The obvious thing that will happen is, they will get contaminants onto my wet painted surfaces.

When everything was completed the client and builder were very happy with the finished kitchen, which makes it all worthwhile in the end.

A nice colour choice – Manor House Gray No. 265. I have recently completed the redecorating of this hallway, stairs and landing in Eden Village, Sittingbourne.
